XR, extended reality, is an umbrella term covering several related technologies like VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality), and MR (mixed reality). All XR technologies take the human-to-PC screen interface and modify it, either by 1) immersing the user in the virtual environment (VR), 2) adding to or augmenting the user’s surroundings (AR), or 3) both of those (MR). The XJTLU XR Innovation Centre was proposed by the XJTLU Learning Mall and the Management Information Technology and System Office colleagues at the beginning of 2021. The idea for the Centre was based on the work done in the Language Centre VR Lab and a desire for the University to have an institutional space for this kind of learning, teaching, and research.
After many rounds of planning and proposals, IR1011 was chosen as the space to house the facility, not just for its wonderful views, but because it suits our needs for space and easy access to all.
As of July 2022, we have a promising space with a plan for the future. The wall previously dividing the room has been removed, so we have created a single, large unified workspace. Desks and chairs are in place, waiting for XR equipment.
